RTC Communications provides advanced communications services to the SW Indiana communities. RTC offers a variety of services to residential customers over its advanced fiber optic and layer 3 Cisco and Calix redundant networks, including CPE, high-speed internet, DIA, Ethernet, UCaaS or hosted voice, managed Wi-Fi, and ITaaS or IT support solutions. RTC offers communications solutions to small, medium, and enterprise businesses.
RTC is investing in its optical fiber network infrastructure to improve how we live, work, and communicate. Our network transformation will be critical for our future connectivity to businesses, including new products such as HPBX, DIA, SIP VoIP, and future smart cities. To support this network transformation, as an inside/outside systems plant engineer, you will help engineer our extensive fiber-optic network to support our expanding lines of technology-based business. In this position, you must be self-driven, with sound Outside and Inside Systems Plant (OSP/ISP) technical experience, and have the ability to design and deploy the latest cost-effective fiber to the home solutions in new and existing market areas, and thrive in a fast-paced team environment.
Responsible for all engineering and construction activities associated with expanding and maintaining the OSP network infrastructure.
Lead complex, large-scale projects, driving productivity through vendor resources to meet deliverables with aggressive deadlines.
Engage appropriate internal and external organizations with professional written/verbal communications to accomplish required tasks.
Coordinate project activities with contractors, developers, municipalities, and consultants.
Proposes solutions supported by sound engineering and operational productivity to achieve goals in creative and effective ways.
Recognizes vulnerabilities in network infrastructure and makes intelligent decisions to ensure reliability and growth plans can be met – within financial constraints.
Process reports, vendor invoices, material receipts, and other administrative duties.
Receive general instruction, otherwise perform independently with minimal supervision, exercising latitude to achieve daily objectives and critical/complex assignments.
Multi-tasks to effectively manage a wide range of simultaneous activities often interrupted by other demands.
Create Install, Splice, and Facility Prep packages for field installation and testing. Maintain local site and fiber records.
Schedule and prioritize the workload of the fiber engineering and external vendor resources within an assigned area
Manage record documentation completed by Fiber Engineers and contract resources associated with RTC's fiber network infrastructure.
Overall responsibilities for fiber asset management associated with the implementation and maintenance of fiber networks and services
Partner with utility and municipal providers to streamline permit application, process, and initiatives such as the FCC's One Touch Make-Ready program.
Maintain knowledge of technology in use and/or under development for its impact or potential impact on the operational business process
Maintain quality service by understanding and enforcing organization standards.
Prepare detailed cost analysis, project specifications, spend forecasts, route mapping, requisitions, and business justifications.
Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Strong computer skills (Databases, Processes, and Administrative) -
Firm understanding of project and time management methods that allow for the ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Robust knowledge and skill for more complex applications to include Word, Excel, Lucid, ArcGIS, Google Earth, and other OSP telco industry-standard software platforms.
Organizational, interpersonal, negotiation, and operational skills.
Ability to build sustainable, strong results against given metrics.
Ability to work independently and with a team.
Ability to proactively address issues in a high-volume environment.
Education and Experience
A degree in Engineering or a related field, civil engineering experience is considered a plus.
Minimum three or more years' experience in the telecommunications industry.
Experience deploying fiber to the home optical networks.
Knowledge of engineering principles within a job-related functional area to include general practices, procedures, and industry standards (Example USDA-RUS Standards)
Knowledge of engineering/design and review, extensive construction and field knowledge, working knowledge with local jurisdictions, and permitting requirements/processes.
Experience working with various local, state, and federal agencies; examples, department of natural resources, the department of transportation, and other approval agencies.
